Sonic Therapies for Toxic Relationships is a body of compositions that invite re-consideration of relations with insects through listening. Dramatic shifts in insect populations due to anthropogenic environmental change have been portrayed by the popular media in a narrative of catastrophization. In these ecological sound works, I propose that we listen to insects – and speculate about how they listen – in order to move towards curiosity and away from fear and overwhelm. The addition of percussion and electronic instrumentation in response to insects and anthrophony presents possibilities for moving beyond anxiety and avoidance, and towards intentional exchange.
