about

In August 2017, I began a collaborative multimedia research project on ant acoustics in the Brazilian Amazon. This is the first collection of music from this work in the intersection of art, ecology, entomology, and bioacoustics. UAU features 5 compositions based on my recordings of ants, soundscapes of their habitats, and observations of their movement and form. Most of my field research was conducted at Adolpho Ducke Reserve near Manaus, Brazil. Ants are doing so much of the vital work maintaining tropical rainforest ecosystem functions: herbivory, seed dispersal, predation, decomposition - and these habitats are in turn crucial to global climate regulation. Can listening to ants generate empathy and encourage us to do our part in countering climate change? Myrmecologists Fabricio Baccaro and Erica Valle at Universidade Federal do Amazonas are producing and analyzing spectrograms of our ant recordings to examine differences in acoustics across species. I look forward as we continue our collaborative experiment. The second album of work from this research was composed at my recent residency at the Banff Centre, and will be released in mid-2019. This work was supported by Labverde, INPA, ICBEU, UFAM, the Oregon Community Foundation, and the Oregon Arts Commission.

The compositions:
Surface of the Abyss at Ducke is based on passive listening of the penetrating diurnal soundscape of Reserva Ducke, and features the most dominant aspects of this soundscape.* Multispecies is a collage featuring sounds of army ants, a species of Pheidole ant, and leaf-cutting ants. The second version includes percussion based on these sounds. Atta is based on recordings of the enormous colonies of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens; Terra Firme is based on unique calls of birds and cicadas heard during the afternoon at Ducke, and was commissioned by Leah Bowden for her doctoral thesis performance at the University of California- San Diego.

*The Abyss is a concept I talked about a lot with visual artists Renata Cruz and Laura Gorski at Ducke; our general notion of the Abyss in regards to the rainforest is the cumulative space where processes involving death, decomposition, seed dispersal, and seed growth occur; these processes are mutually dependent with the invertebrate community. And so the dominant sounds we heard at Ducke are like the conspicuous acoustic "surface" of this crucially important Abyss, this mysterious and sometimes intimidating tight cycling of energy through the ecosystem at the soil surface.
